Good Country People by Flannery OConnor Characterization as Theme Essay

Great Country People by Flannery OConnor Characterization as Theme The Depth of Hulga?s Despair Portrayal is the most pervasive segment utilized for the improvement of topics in Flannery O?Connor?s mocking short story ?Good Country People.? O?Connor imaginatively develops character advancement all through her story as a methods for making staggered subjects that come full circle in moral story. In spite of the fact that the subjects are autonomous of one another, the characters are not; the advancement of one character is reliant upon the improvement of another. Each character?s emotions and conduct are impacted by the conduct of the others. Delight/Hulga, as the story?s principle character, is the independently most critical character to the topics of this story. She is described as splendid and scholastically refined, yet naã ¯ve to the sentiments and inspirations of others. Amusingly, Hulga has a Ph.D. in reasoning, yet she has a thin perspective on her reality and no understanding into different people?s genuine character. This difference in Hulga?s character is the subject of one of the story?s topics: scholastic information isn't to be mistaken for good judgment. O?Connor keeps on setting up subject through her portrayal of Hulga. She portrays Hulga as being negative about the world and the individuals she knows. The incongruity here is that she considers these to be as being straightforward ?nation individuals,? she doesn?t consider them to be they really are, brimming with concealed sentiments and inspirations. She sees herself as better than her mom, Mrs. Hopewell, and her mother?s occupant, Mrs. Freeman. Her assessment of different characters as not as much as herself, in light of their inclination to see their reality through the eyes of southern ladies, limits Hulga?s communication with them. She... ...thinks about her and in this manner empowers her into letting down her gatekeeper and confiding in him. This becomes Hulga?s defeat and the most significant subject of O?Connor?s story: individuals aren?t consistently what they show up or ?you can?t pass judgment flippantly.? Her narcissism permits Manley to convince her to evacuate her leg. He gets it and escapes with it, yet not before telling her that he has stabbed her in the back. O?Connor?s far reaching character improvement drives her perusers into smugly judging Hulga as better than different characters in her story. She makes this a stride further in her advancement of Manley Pointer as a guiltless. Through this turn of events, O?Connor quiets her perusers into generalizing the characters into the personas she needs them to see. Hulga?s revelation is topical. A definitive incongruity is that not exclusively is Hulga hoodwinked by Manley, her perusers are as well.

Overview of Humanistic Psychology

Overview of Humanistic Psychology History and Biographies Print Overview of Humanistic Psychology By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on June 25, 2019 serts / Getty Images More in Psychology History and Biographies Psychotherapy Basics Student Resources Theories Phobias Emotions Sleep and Dreaming In This Article Table of Contents Expand Key Focus Brief History Impact Strengths and Criticisms View All Back To Top Humanistic psychology is a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole individual and stresses concepts such as free will, self-efficacy, and self-actualization.    Rather than concentrating on dysfunction, humanistic psychology strives to help people fulfill their potential and maximize their well-being. Humanistic psychology, also often referred to as humanism emerged during the 1950s as a reaction to the psychoanalysis and behaviorism that dominated psychology at the time.  Psychoanalysis was focused on understanding the unconscious motivations that drive behavior while behaviorism studied the conditioning processes that produce behavior. Humanist thinkers felt that both psychoanalysis and behaviorism were too pessimistic, either focusing on the most tragic of emotions or failing to take into account the role of personal choice. However, it is not necessary to think of these three  schools of thought  as competing elements. Each  branch of psychology  has contributed to our understanding of the human mind and behavior. Humanistic psychology added yet another dimension that takes a more holistic view of the individual. Key Focus As it developed, humanistic psychology focused on each individuals potential and stressed the importance of growth and self-actualization. The fundamental belief of humanistic psychology is that people are innately good and that mental and social problems result from deviations from this natural tendency. Humanism also suggests that people possess personal agency and that they are motivated to use this free will to pursue things that will help them achieve their full potential as human beings. This need for fulfillment and personal growth is a key motivator of all behavior. People are continually looking for new ways to grow, to become better, to learn new things, and to experience psychological growth and self-actualization. Brief History The early development of humanistic psychology was heavily influenced by the works of a few key theorists, especially Abraham  Maslow and Carl Rogers. Other prominent humanist thinkers included Rollo May and Erich Fromm. In 1943, Maslow described his hierarchy of needs in A Theory of Human Motivation published in  Psychological Review. Later during the late 1950s, Abraham Maslow, and other psychologists held meetings to discuss developing a professional organization devoted to a more humanist approach to psychology. They agreed that topics such as self-actualization, creativity, individuality, and related topics were the central themes of this new approach. In 1951, Carl Rogers published  Client-Centered Therapy, which described his humanistic, client-directed approach to therapy. In 1961,  Journal of Humanistic Psychology  was established. It was in 1962 that the  American Association for Humanistic Psychology  was formed and by 1971, humanistic psychology  become  an APA division. In 1962, Maslow published Toward a Psychology of Being, in which he described humanistic psychology as the third force in psychology. The first and second forces were behaviorism and psychoanalysis respectively. Impact The humanist movement had an enormous influence on the course of psychology and contributed new ways of thinking about mental health. It offered a new approach to understanding human behaviors and motivations and led to developing new techniques and approaches to psychotherapy. Some of the major ideas and concepts that emerged as a result of the humanist movement include an emphasis on things such as: Self-conceptHierarchy of needsUnconditional positive regardFree willClient-centered therapySelf-actualizationFully functioning personPeak experiences Strengths and Criticisms One of the major strengths of humanistic psychology is that it emphasizes the role of the individual. This school of psychology gives people more credit in controlling and determining their state of mental health. It also takes environmental influences into account. Rather than focusing solely on our internal thoughts and desires, humanistic psychology also credits the environments influence on our experiences. Humanistic psychology helped remove some of the stigma attached to therapy and made it more acceptable for normal, healthy individuals to explore their abilities and potential through therapy. While humanistic psychology  continues to influence therapy, education, healthcare, and other areas, it has not been without some criticism. Humanistic psychology is often seen as too subjective; the importance of individual experience makes it difficult to objectively study and measure humanistic phenomena. How can we objectively tell if someone is self-actualized? The answer, of course, is that we cannot. We can only rely upon the individuals own assessment of their experience. Another major criticism is that observations are unverifiable; there is no accurate way to measure or quantify these qualities. A Word From Verywell Today, the concepts central to humanistic psychology can be seen in many disciplines including other branches of psychology, education, therapy, political movements, and other areas. For example, transpersonal psychology and positive psychology both draw heavily on humanist influences. The goals of humanistic psychology remain as relevant today as they were in the 1940s and 1950s. Humanistic psychology strives to empower individuals, enhance well-being, push people toward fulfilling their potential and improve communities all over the world.

New SAT Essay Example Passage

Although the new SAT essay has us saying goodbye to coming up with personal, historical, or literary examples to use as supporting details, which was the source of stress  for many students, it now calls for students to showcase a new skill: how to  analyze an argument. As such, this  post will go over a sample essay prompt similar to what you might find on the SAT and an example of how  to annotate  the passage, which will not only help you find the supporting material youd want to use in your essay, but also will allow you to work through your own reasoning for why the writers methods are effective. To maximize the effectiveness of this post, I recommend that you read How To Conquer the New SAT Essay if you havent already and  the entirety of this post, and then try your hand at annotating the passage (track changes on MS Word work great if you want to save trees) before looking at  my example. Sounds good? Lets go! New SAT Essay Sample Prompt As you read the passage below, consider how  Barbara Ehrenreich uses evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims. reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence. stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed. Adapted from Barbara Ehrenreich, â€Å"The Selfish Side of Gratitude†  ©2015 by The New York Times Company. Originally published December 31, 2015. This holiday season, there was something in the air that was even more inescapable than the scent of pumpkin spice: gratitude. In November, NPR issued a number of brief exhortations to cultivate gratitude, culminating in an hourlong special on the â€Å"science of gratitude,† narrated by Susan Sarandon. Writers in Time magazine, The New York Times and Scientific American recommended it as a surefire ticket to happiness and even better health. Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California, Davis, who studies the â€Å"science of gratitude,† argues that it leads to a stronger immune system and lower blood pressure, as well as â€Å"more joy and pleasure.† It’s good to express our thanks, of course, to those who deserve recognition. But this holiday gratitude is all about you, and how you can feel better. Gratitude is hardly a fresh face on the self-improvement scene. By the turn of the century, Oprah Winfrey and other motivational figures were promoting an â€Å"attitude of gratitude.† Martin Seligman, the father of â€Å"positive psychology,† which is often enlisted to provide some sort of scientific basis for â€Å"positive thinking,† has been offering instruction in gratitude for more than a decade†¦ [But] positive thinking was in part undone by its own silliness, glaringly displayed in the 2006 bestseller â€Å"The Secret,† which announced that you could have anything, like the expensive necklace you’d been coveting, simply by â€Å"visualizing† it in your possession. The financial crash of 2008 further dimmed the luster of positive thinking, which had done so much to lure would-be homeowners and predatory mortgage lenders into a speculative frenzy. This left the self-improvement field open to more cautious stances, like mindfulness and resilience and — for those who could still muster it — gratitude. †¦Perhaps it’s no surprise that gratitude’s rise to self-help celebrity status owes a lot to the†¦John Templeton Foundation. At the start of this decade, the foundation†¦gave $5.6 million to Dr. Emmons, the gratitude researcher. It also funded a $3 million initiative called Expanding the Science and Practice of Gratitude through the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, which co-produced the special that aired on NPR. The foundation does not fund projects to directly improve the lives of poor individuals, but it has spent a great deal, through efforts like these, to improve their attitudes. [Furthermore, it appears that] much of the gratitude advice involves no communication or interaction of any kind. Consider this, from a yoga instructor on CNN.com: â€Å"Cultivate your sense of gratitude by incorporating giving thanks into a personal morning ritual such as writing in a gratitude journal, repeating an affirmation or practicing a meditation. It could even be as simple as writing what you give thanks for on a sticky note and posting it on your mirror or computer. To help you establish a daily routine, create a ‘thankfulness’ reminder on your phone or computer to pop up every morning and prompt you.† Who is interacting here? â€Å"You† and â€Å"you.† †¦Yet there is a need for more gratitude, especially from those who have a roof over their heads and food on their table. Only it should be a more vigorous and inclusive sort of gratitude than what is being urged on us now. Who picked the lettuce in the fields, processed the standing rib roast, drove these products to the stores, stacked them on the supermarket shelves and, of course, prepared them and brought them to the table? †¦There are crowds, whole communities of actual people, many of them with aching backs and tenuous finances, who made the meal possible. The real challenge of gratitude lies in figuring out how to express our debt to them, whether through generous tips or, say, by supporting their demands for decent pay and better working conditions. But now we’re not talking about gratitude, we’re talking about a far more muscular impulse — and this is, to use the old-fashioned term, â€Å"solidarity† — which may involve getting up off the yoga mat. Write an essay in which you explain how Barbara Ehrenreich builds an argument to persuade her  audience that expressing gratitude has developed into a selfish act. In your essay, analyze how Ehrenreich uses one or more of the features in the directions that precede the passage (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage. Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Ehrenreichs claims, but rather explain how Ehrenreich builds an argument to persuade her  audience. How to  Annotate the SAT Essay Passage The first thing you should take note of is the fact that the prompt tells you what kind of elements you need to focus on to see how the author builds his or her argument.  Because we are asked about how Ehrenreich built her argument for  expressing gratitude has developed into a selfish act, I kept this statement at the forefront of my mind as I looked for evidence in the passage as well as what Ive noticed about tone, word choice, sentence structure, and other elements that served to help make  Ehrenreichs point. I also didnt take much notes just general comments about the purpose of the initial paragraphs until I reached the evidence I needed for my essay, which is when I took a LOT of notes. Finished with your own annotation? Check out  how I would  annotate this text (which I would write in a much more rushed and abbreviated manner on the real thing) to see if we were on similar wavelengths!
